Moving to Applied Technology

Applied Technology is located on the heart of the Mendips at Doulting, near Shepton Mallet. This unique location for a high technology company offers an equally unique range of options for those re-locating.

Our staff living in a wide range of locations evenly distributed around the office, from Bath and Bristol in the North to Rural Somerset in the south with it’s fine country living and pretty market towns. Here we try to give an overview of some of the options.

Close to the Office

The local village of Doulting is an attractive local village featuring a medieval the barn and two pubs. The Poachers Pocket is very close to Applied Technology offering 4 real ales, good pub food and a nice garden looking out at the Mendips. The closest town is Shepton Mallet, a rural town with a range of shops and facilities such as the sports centre. Other towns in the area are Frome, Midsomer Norton and Radstock.

Close to the office are a number of pretty rural villages. Cranmore is the next village and larger than Doulting with another good pub and home of our local tourist attraction, the East Somerset Steam Railway.  Further north are Holcombe which also has an excellent pub and pretty views and Kilmersdon, the location of “Jack and Jill” hill. Mells is 10 minutes away and is a truly rural village; it also has an excellent pub (featured in the Good Pub Guide) as well as links to Jack Horner (also of nursery rhyme fame). Many other villages nestling in the Mendip hills offer good value accommodation in beautiful surroundings.

City Living

Many employees live in the two big cities to the north of us, Bath and Bristol. Bath is about a 30-minute commute in the morning and Bristol 45 depending on which part of Bristol you are travelling from. Those coming from the cities have the advantage of travelling against the majority of the traffic. Those moving from the Thames Valley for example find the commute a pleasure by comparison!

Bath is a truly historic town. The famous Georgian crescents give it character and world- famous tourist pulling power. The Roman baths and Abbey are also popular places to visit. The town centre has a good range of shops, ranging from fashionable boutiques to large multiples including a newly refurbished M&S. Bath has a theatre as well as an excellent selection of restaurants and pubs. The only problem is that housing is very expensive, the equal of London or Cambridge.

Bristol is a large city offering every option from exclusive, fashionable Clifton through good value residential areas, to city-centre student areas. Town centre shopping is complemented by the snappily named Regional Shopping Centre at Cribbs Causeway, close to the M5/M4 junction. Bristol is famous for its nightlife -  “the strip” in the evening is a pulsating mix of night clubs, bars and restaurants. Bristol has good transport links, being close to the M4 and M5 as well as having an international airport south of the city and good rail links to London Paddington, Exeter, the Midlands and the North East .

Easy Access to the East

Away from the citys a number of smaller towns offer a wide choice of locations with good road access to the M4 and/or M3/A303.

Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge have easy access to the M4 via Chippenham or Bath, and are only 30 minutes from Applied Technology. Bradford on Avon is a beautiful small town, famous for the small streets of weavers’ cottages winding up the hill beyond the river Avon and the town centre. The Bridge Tea Rooms has long been an attraction for afternoon tea and occasional meetings… (we recommend the chocolate roulade).

Trowbridge is a bigger town with a good range of shops, supermarkets as well as sports facilities. Westbury, Frome and Warminster are closer to the A303/M3. Each offers a range of accommodation and easy travelling to the office.

Rural Somerset

To the south and west can be found a range of villages and towns offering an excellent standard of living. Towns such as Wells, Glastonbury, and Street are lovely locations, again all within easy reach of Applied Technology.

Wells is famous for its Cathedral and choir. Glastonbury is famous for its “mystic” qualities. The annual Glastonbury Festival takes place in the village of Pilton, just outside the town. People who live in the village enjoy the notoriety (and free tickets) the event brings. Street has a large shopping village run by Clarks (they of the shoe shops) offering a range of shops selling discounted clothes, seconds and such like. The Mendips have a range of things to do and see. The famous Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole caves for example. Rock climbers and cavers also flock to the area.

The team boating at Bradford Lock

Further west the Somerset levels lead to the county town of Taunton. This rural area is both beautiful and packed with good pubs. This is an area worth exploring. Further south the towns of Ilminster and Yeovil are on the main A303 link between the M3 and Exeter.

A Nice Place to Live!

The area around Applied Technology offers a superb quality of life. We look forward to welcoming you to Applied Technology and hope you will have chance to enjoy the area.
